Your Instructor

Dr. Kenneth D. Mahrer, Chief Scientist, SIGMA³

Dr. Mahrer specializes in bringing microseismic imaging and hydraulic fracturing together. His duties center on building and reporting the full picture of the microseismic response from a hydraulic fracture stimulation and what itmeans: compiling, evaluating, and interpreting the full complement of data sets spanning from design and well completion data, engineering (i.e., injection) data, geologic data, logging and petrophysical data, through the microseismic data, and any other germane data (e.g., tracer and production data).

Dr. Mahrer holds Bachelor's and Masters' degrees in physics and a Ph.D. in geophysics from Stanford University. His Ph.D. thesis combined fault modeling with fracture mechanics. Following his Ph.D., he won two postdoctoral fellowships in fracture mechanics, one at the University of Sheffield (England) and the other at Northwestern University (USA). After these fellowships he taught geophysics and geology in the Geology Department at the University of New Mexico.

This was followed by working as a principal geophysicist at Teledyne Geotech. Teledyne Geotech fielded the first team to research, demonstrate, and develop the commercial applicability of microseismic monitoring as a diagnostic tool ofhydraulic fracture stimulations for the oil and gas industry. His career has included a diversity of positions including, being a member of the team that monitored, mapped, and characterized the microseismicity induced by the world's deepest, continuous, high-pressure injection well (Paradox Valley, western Colorado, continuous injection since 1996).

Prior to joining SIGMA³, Dr. Mahrer was a Principal Geophysicist in the microseismic mapping group at Weatherford International. Dr. Mahrer has been a technical editor for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and is a technical editor for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). He has written a column on technical writing (THE WRITER's BLOCK) for the SEG journal, The Leading Edge. In addition to teaching short courses on microseismic imaging of hydraulic fracturing, Dr. Mahrer teaches short courses on technical writing.
